We have been invited to participate in the Carolina Lowcountry and Atlantic World (CLAW) Faculty Seminar featuring Dr. James Walvin, Professor Emeritus of History at York University in England.  He will lead the seminar entitled "Slavery and Public Memory."  Dr. Walvin is one of the world's leading experts on the history of slavery and the slave trade, has recently completed a book on the Zong Massacre (when 133 slaves were thrown alive from a slave-ship so that the owners could make an insurance claim for lost cargo), and is the author of The Trader, the Owner, the Slave, a concise and engaging parallel biography of John Newton, author of "Amazing Grace," Thomas Thistlewood, and Olaudah Equiano.

Professional Development Workshop: "Personal Essays: Too Much Information"
Tuesday, October 20th
5:00pm – 6:30pm
Hawkins Living Learning Center
A true workshop, which means you need to bring something to "work" on.  Bring a printed copy of your personal statement (or draft of it) that you have used/will use in the future.  You might use this prompt: "Prepare a one-page personal statement that captures who you are as a scholar and person, including the people, events, and experiences that have fundamentally shaped you".  We will use your own personal statements as the basis of our work. Please be prepared to share your statement with others. If this feels too personal to you, make up a hypothetical person and write a personal statement for him/her!!  If you can't find your statement or don't have time to work on one, please come anyway. You will benefit from the exercise regardless.
