May 23, 2002

A descendant of one of this country's most prominent 19th century figures visited the College's Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture on May 17.

Frederick Douglass IV of Baltimore, Md. is the great-great gradson of Frederick Douglass, the famed 19th century abolitionist, orator, statesman and publisher. Douglass travels throughout America to perpetuate the legacy of his famed ancestor by reading his speeches and reenacting key episodes of his life. His wife B.J. portrays Anna Murray Douglass, Frederick's wife. To make their presentations even more authentic the Douglass's wear period clothing.

The Douglass's are pictured with Avery Center staff.

They visited the historic Avery Center on Bull Street during a three day tour of Charleston area schools and churches.
