C of C Announces New Board of Trustee Leadership and Four New Trustees July 19, 2002
On July 19, 2002, the Board of Trustees of the College of Charleston elected new leadership. The new chairman of the board is Robert S. Small, Jr. Small is president of AVTEX Commercial Properties, Inc. in Greenville, S.C. He has been a member of the College of Charleston's Board of Trustees for 10 years. His grandfather, Robert, served on the board, as did his father, Robert S. Small, Sr. Small is married and the father of four. College of Charleston President Lee Higdon said of Small's election: “Small is an accomplished individual with a strong commitment to the College, our students, and liberal arts education. He will prove to be a fine choice to lead this board and I’m delighted to be able to work with him over the next several years and benefit from his wisdom and counsel.” “I’m honored to be elected chair and look forward to working with the very talented and dedicated individuals who comprise this board,” Small said. “I am committed to supporting President Lee Higdon as he leads the College of Charleston in building a national reputation and providing a first rate education for our students.” Marie M. Land is the newly elected vice chairman of the board. Land is a resident of Manning, S.C., and is a long-time College of Charleston board member. She is a retired occupational therapist who is very active in her community. She is involved with public education, Habitat for Humanity, the arts, and history, and also serves as vice president of the board for Spoleto USA. Land is a Master Gardener and landscape design critic. She is married to S.C. Senator John C. Land III. The Lands have three children and six grandchildren. J. Vincent Price, Jr., a Gaffney resident, has been re-elected secretary of the Board of Trustees. He has served on the board for 13 years. Price is a College of Charleston graduate and life-long member of the Alumni Association. He majored in history at the College, played on their tennis and basketball teams, and was elected to the Athletic Hall of Fame. Price has two children, both of whom are attorneys, and is the grandfather of two. Four new members have also been named to the Board of Trustees. They are Bobby Marlowe of Mount Pleasant, Donald Belk of the Isle of Palms, Dwight Johnson of Florence, and Annaliza Moorhead of Anderson. Bobby Marlowe is the president of The Marlowe-Chandler Co., Inc. in Mount Pleasant, S.C. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the College of Charleston and a master’s degree from the University of South Carolina. He is a life member of the College of Charleston Alumni Association and is a Top Cat member of the school’s Cougar (athletics) Club. He also is a member of the Charleston Trident Homebuilders Association and is a former chair of the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission. Donald Belk of Isle of Palms is a retired real estate broker and is also a College of Charleston alumnus. His professional and civic memberships include the C of C Alumni Association, the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, the South Carolina Historical Society, and the National Association of Realtors (South Carolina and national chapters). Dwight Johnson works in business sales for BellSouth in Florence. He has degrees from North Greenville College and Charleston Southern University. His memberships include the Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce, the Darlington Chamber of Commerce, and the National Emergency Numbering Association and he is a past general chairman of the South Carolina International Trade Conference. Annaliza Moorhead is a certified public accountant and an alumna of the College of Charleston. She is a member of C of C’s Alumni Association as well as the South Carolina Association of CPAs, the American Institute of CPAs, the Junior League of Anderson, and the Anderson County Arts Council.
