On October 14, 2002, the College of Charleston held a naming and dedication ceremony for its newest residence hall: Marcia Kelly McAlister Hall. Located on the corner of St. Philip and Vanderhorst Streets, McAlister Hall is available to all full-time students and features its own café, student lounge, laundry, and administrative and security offices.

The McAlister Residence Hall is named for the mother of M. Anthony McAlister, Jr., the president of McAlister Development Company. Mr. McAlister and his wife, Bonnie, an alumna of the College, contributed a cash gift of $1 million to the College’s unrestricted funds. Mr. McAlister’s father, Dr. M. Anthony McAlister, additionally provided a planned gift of more than $1 million to the College of Charleston Foundation.

A group of distinguished guests attended the affair, including members of the McAlister family, College faculty and staff, and the Board of Trustees. Sue Summer-Kresse, senior vice president for institutional advancement, welcomed the audience and was followed by Reverend Cameron P. Keyser, of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, who led the invocation. Speakers of the day were Lee Higdon, president of the College; Robert S. Small, Jr., chairman of the Board of Trustees; Jeri Cabot, acting senior vice president for student affairs and dean of students; Alicia Scherini, president of the Student Government Association; and M. Anthony McAlister, Jr. The McAlister family unveiled a plaque honoring Marcia Kelly McAlister that will be mounted inside the residence hall.

President Lee Higdon commented on the McAlisters’ generous spirit and the memory of Marcia McAlister: “In their extraordinary generosity to the College, Anthony and Bonnie McAlister have continued the legacy that Anthony’s mother embodied as both a parent and as an educator. In addition to raising five children, Marcia Kelly McAlister devoted her life to education. And from what I have learned of her, she was a strong, unique, and charismatic woman . . .”

Marcia Kelly McAlister was born in Anderson, S.C., on November 12, 1935. She was educated in public schools and graduated from Anderson Junior College and Lander College (now University). In 1961, she married Dr. M. Anthony McAlister, and they lived in Charleston, Isle of Palms, and Greenville before settling in Belton, where she spent the rest of her life until her death in 1994. Marcia McAlister was a special education teacher in Belton and was active with Special Olympics. She was the mother of five children: M. Anthony McAlister, Jr., Theron P. McAlister, Marcus A. McAlister, Matthew A. McAlister, and Maresa McAlister Poore.
