Elderhostel Program

Elderhostel is an educational program committed to being the preeminent provider of high quality, affordable, educational opportunities for older adults. Elderhostel believes learning is lifelong process; sharing new ideas, challenges, and experiences is rewarding in every season of life.

Founded in 1975, Elderhostel programs were originally based on a few college campuses in New England. Today, Elderhostel annually serves hundreds of thousands of older adult students who travel to residential educational programs throughout the U.S. and the world.

Elderhosteliers come together as a group of individuals who share a common passion for learning. This love of learning for its own sake forms the basis for lasting friendships and provides a rich environment for intellectual and personal growth. In Elderhostel programs, and in the Elderhostel organization itself, learning is encouraged, people respect and listen to one another, and individuals are valued.

Elderhostel sets the highest standards for program value. It provides innovative educational programming and expanding accessibility for an increasing diverse, older adult student population.

The College programs explore more than three centuries of Charleston’s rich history—from its early settlement to its growth into a wealthy colony, from the war of independence to the Civil War, from reconstruction through the world wars, and up to today. During the Revolution, the patriots of Charleston defeated the mighty British Navy in the harbor. The Civil War began in Charleston—Fort Sumter, to be exact—and since then, the city has continued to play a unique role at the heart of American history. Learn about the influence of African Americans on Charleston’s history and visit some of Charleston’s historic landmarks. Spring programs include visits to several of the city’s prized gardens.
